MINÉR. Phosphate hydraté naturel d'aluminium, de densité 2,34, de formule Al3(PO4)2 (OH)3 5 H2O, cristallisant en prismes rhomboïdaux, qui tapisse les fentes de certaines roches schisteuses. Famille des phosphates alumineux. Wavellite (...). Cette espèce, où l'analyse révèle (...) fluor et (...) eau, se présente quelquefois en cristaux (...), avec clivages parfaits (...); mais plus souvent en globules radiés, aplatis, formés de fibres très déliées, blanc jaunâtre ou vertes (LAPPARENT, Minér., 1899, p. 534).
Prononc.:[wavelit]. Étymol. et Hist. 1824 (L.-J. THENARD, Traité de chimie élémentaire, théorique et pratique, III, p. 131 ds QUEM. DDL t. 2). Empr. à l'angl. wavellite formé en 1805 sur le nom du britannique W. Wawel qui découvrit ce minéral (v. NED et Encyclop. brit.); cf. suff. fr. -ite.
